Travel Essentials

Our adventure kicked off in the vibrant city of Abuja, where we were greeted with open arms by our extended family. Spending quality time with loved ones was just what we needed after a long flight. And speaking of Abuja, let me give you the lowdown on three must-visit places in this bustling Nigerian capital:

  1. Aso Rock: As one of the most iconic landmarks in Abuja, Aso Rock offers breathtaking views and is a great spot for a family hike. Whether you’re a nature enthusiast or just looking for some Instagram-worthy snaps, this place won’t disappoint.
  2. National Children’s Park and Zoo: With our energetic boys in tow, a visit to the National Children’s Park and Zoo was a no-brainer. From exotic wildlife to fun-filled activities, this park had something for everyone. It was the perfect opportunity for Gozie and Kezie to learn and play in a vibrant outdoor setting.
  3. Jabi Lake Mall: Who doesn’t love a bit of retail therapy? Jabi Lake Mall is a shopper’s paradise, offering a wide range of stores, eateries, and entertainment options. It was the ideal place to indulge in some leisurely shopping and treat ourselves to delicious Nigerian cuisine.

After soaking up the sights and sounds of Abuja, we made our way to Charles’ father’s village in Issele Uku. While we missed out on attending a traditional wedding due to Charles’ prestigious chief title ceremony, witnessing him don the official red cap of a chief was a moment of immense pride for our family.

Next stop: Lagos! The bustling metropolis stole our hearts with its infectious energy and vibrant culture. Here are three must-visit places that made our Lagos experience truly unforgettable:

  1. Lekki Conservation Centre: Nature lovers, rejoice! Lekki Conservation Centre offers a refreshing escape from the urban hustle and bustle. We enjoyed exploring the lush greenery, canopy walkway, and spotting diverse wildlife. It was a serene oasis in the heart of the city.
  2. Nike Art Gallery: Art aficionados, prepare to be dazzled! Nike Art Gallery is a treasure trove of African art, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of Nigeria. We were mesmerized by the vibrant paintings, sculptures, and traditional crafts on display. It was a feast for the senses!
  3. Lagos Island: No trip to Lagos is complete without a visit to Lagos Island. From historic landmarks like Freedom Park to bustling markets like Balogun Market, this area offers a glimpse into the city’s past and present. We savored every moment of our exploration, soaking up the vibrant atmosphere and friendly locals.

And let’s not forget about the real stars of the show – Gozie and Kezie! These two bundles of energy had the time of their lives in Nigeria, thanks to endless playdates with their cousins. From exploring the village to playing traditional games, they were in their element. In fact, they had so much fun that the idea of returning to the States didn’t sit too well with them. It was heartwarming to see them bonding with family and immersing themselves in the rich culture of Nigeria. we had the pleasure of celebrating a very special occasion while in Nigeria. Gozie, with his early January birthday, had the incredible opportunity to ring in his 8th birthday surrounded by all his cousins. It was a joyous affair filled with laughter, games, and of course, lots of cake!

As we bid farewell to Nigeria and boarded our flight back to the States, our hearts were filled with cherished memories of our family adventure. From reconnecting with our roots to experiencing the warmth and hospitality of our homeland, this trip was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

So, if you’re ever considering a trip to Nigeria, I highly recommend packing your bags and embarking on your own African adventure. Who knows? You might just discover the magic of this incredible country for yourself! Till next time, wanderlust warriors. Stay adventurous!
