My First Solo Trip: A Transformative Wellness Retreat at Miraval Austin

This year, I gave myself something I didn’t realize I needed—a reset. For my 37th birthday, I decided to celebrate in a way that poured back into me: my first solo trip and my first wellness retreat at Miraval Austin. It wasn’t just about unplugging from my phone—it was about reconnecting with my mind, body, and spirit. (My friend Alisha told me taking brand trips on my own didn’t count as a solo trip so this is the first one completely planned by me LOL).

What Is a Wellness Retreat?

A wellness retreat is more than just a vacation—it’s an intentional getaway designed to focus on your mental, physical, and emotional health. These retreats often include activities and classes that promote mindfulness, relaxation, and self-discovery.

At Miraval Austin, the wellness experience was all-encompassing. From yoga and meditation to fitness classes and creative workshops, the retreat offered countless ways to restore balance and recharge. Unlike traditional vacations, wellness retreats are tailored to help you disconnect from daily stressors and reconnect with yourself.

Whether you’re looking to address physical tension, quiet a busy mind, or simply take a break from the digital world, a wellness retreat is a transformative experience that encourages growth and healing.

Why I Chose a Wellness Retreat for My First Solo Trip

If we’re being real, the past year hasn’t been the kindest to my body or my spirit. As a content creator, my phone is basically glued to my hand, and while I love what I do, it comes with a price. The hours spent editing, planning, and, yes, scrolling have left me carrying stress in my upper traps and shoulders. It wasn’t just physical—it was emotional too.

By the time my birthday rolled around, I knew I needed a change. I’ve always prioritized self-care, but this time it had to go deeper. I wanted a chance to step away from the screens, the deadlines, and the endless noise to focus on me.

And what better way to do that than by spending a few days at Miraval Austin, a luxury wellness retreat in the heart of Texas Hill Country?

What Miraval Austin Offers

Walking into Miraval, I immediately felt the tension in my body start to release. The resort is surrounded by nature, designed to help you leave the outside world behind and fully immerse yourself in mindfulness and healing.

The best part? Miraval isn’t your typical “relax by the pool” kind of getaway. It offers a range of classes and experiences to help you connect with your body and mind. From yoga and breathwork to meditation and mindful eating, every moment was intentional.

The Classes Made the Difference

Some of the standout classes included:

1. Shoulders, Set Free
This was everything I needed. It focused on releasing tension in the shoulders—a spot where so many of us hold stress, especially if you spend a lot of time on your phone or computer like I do.
2. Happy Hips
As someone who tends to hold tension in my lower body, this class was a game-changer. It helped me unlock flexibility and release tightness I didn’t even realize I had.
3. Ax Throwing
I know this might sound surprising, but ax throwing was one of the most therapeutic activities I’ve ever done! There’s something about channeling all your energy into hitting the target that leaves you feeling lighter and more confident.
4. Aerial Yoga
I loved that Miraval offered unique yoga classes like aerial yoga. It’s both a workout and a chance to play—it challenged my body while encouraging mindfulness.
5. Nature Walks
Staying active is important to me, and I loved that Miraval offered guided nature walks. These helped me get my 10,000 steps in daily while soaking in the beauty of the surrounding Texas Hill Country.

What I Learned From This Retreat

Celebrating my birthday at Miraval wasn’t just about relaxation—it was about transformation. Here are the three biggest lessons I’m taking with me:

1. My Phone Doesn’t Need My Full Attention
As much as I love my work as a content creator, I’ve learned that I don’t have to be constantly “on.” Setting boundaries with my phone is a form of self-care. I’ve started hiding social media apps and don’t allow myself to check them before noon. It’s a small change that’s made a big difference.

2. Rest Isn’t Optional
Rest is productive. Taking the time to recharge isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity. This retreat reminded me that when I prioritize rest, I show up better for everything and everyone else in my life.

3. Balance is Everything
This retreat wasn’t about escaping—it was about finding balance. By focusing on the connection between my mind, body, and spirit, I walked away feeling more aligned and whole than I have in years.

How I’m Carrying This Into the New Year

This experience inspired me to make a few changes moving forward. I’m spending more time playing YouTube videos while working or relaxing, which keeps me productive without the constant urge to scroll. While my phone will always be a part of my life and work, I’m learning to create healthier habits.

As we step into a new year, I encourage you to think about your own habits. How can you unplug and recharge? Whether it’s a retreat, a weekend off social media, or just an hour of stillness, it’s worth it.

Why a Wellness Retreat is the Perfect New Year’s Resolution

Let’s be honest—most New Year’s resolutions don’t stick because they’re about doing more. A wellness retreat, on the other hand, is about doing less. It’s about stepping back, reflecting, and creating space for real change.

If your goals include improving your mental health, managing stress, or finding balance, a place like Miraval Austin could be the reset you need. It’s not just a vacation—it’s an investment in yourself.

This was more than a trip. It was a turning point. For my 37th birthday, I gave myself permission to rest, reflect, and realign, and it’s the best gift I’ve ever received.

If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed, stressed, or stuck in a cycle that isn’t serving you, let this be your sign. Step away. Unplug. Reconnect. Your mind, body, and spirit will thank you.
