We just had the most amazing ski trip ever. And it was a family trip! Heber Valley, Utah, is perfect for families. The beauty is breathtaking and vast, with mountains on all sides, especially at Sundance Mountain Resort.
Let me tell you, I was crazy nervous about how this trip would go with the boys. They’ve gotten much easier to travel with over time, but new places can still be tricky, especially when navigating autistic meltdowns. I’m my son’s biggest comfort and sense of regulation, so I knew there would be moments when I’d need to be extra patient. But we took on the challenge, and it ended up being one of our top family experiences.
My boys have lived their entire lives in Texas. Snow, to them, has always been something they saw in books or on TV. But this time, they got to experience “big” snow. Watching their faces light up as they stepped into a real winter wonderland was everything. We went tubing for the first time, which instantly became our favorite activity, and snowmobiling, which was beyond thrilling. Every moment felt like a scene from a movie, and we made memories we’ll be talking about for years.
If you’re considering a family ski trip but aren’t sure where to start, I’m breaking down everything you need to know—from where to stay to what to do, plus some tips I wish I had known before we arrived.

Why Heber Valley is the Best Spot for a Family Ski Trip
Heber Valley is a dream for families who want a winter getaway without the stress. It’s about an hour from Salt Lake City, making it super easy to get to, and once you arrive, everything feels magical. The first snowfall usually hits at the end of October, and the season lasts through Easter, so there’s plenty of time to plan your trip.
Two resorts, in particular, are where we skied: Sundance Mountain Resort and Deer Valley Resort. Both offer beginner-friendly slopes and excellent ski lessons. This was my boys’ first time on skis, and they did their lessons here. Seeing them go from hesitant to confident in just a few hours was amazing.
Where We Stayed: Homestead Resort in Midway, UT
We stayed at the Homestead Resort, and I can’t recommend it enough. The customer service was incredible, and they made everything feel easy, which is exactly what you need when traveling with kids.
The rooms were beautiful and cozy, and having a heated pool and a natural hot spring on-site was a game changer. After a long day in the snow, soaking in the warm water felt like heaven. Their restaurant, Simon’s, was another highlight. Every meal we had there was delicious.
If you’re staying here, don’t forget swimsuits for the pool and hot spring—it’s worth it.
Our Heber Valley Winter Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival & Settling In
- Arrived at Salt Lake City International Airport
- Drove about an hour to Homestead Resort
- Spent the afternoon swimming in the heated outdoor pool and soaking in the crater
After traveling, taking it easy that first day made all the difference. The kids got to burn off some energy, and we all felt refreshed and ready for the adventure ahead.
Day 2: Snowmobiling, Snow Tubing & Ice Castles
- Breakfast at Simon’s Restaurant at Homestead Resort
- Snowmobiling with Wasatch Excursions
- Snow tubing at Soldier Hollow
- In-room ski fittings with Skis on the Run
- Ice Castles with a sleigh ride
Snowmobiling was a huge hit. The scenery was unreal, and the boys loved the speed and adventure of it. But tubing at Soldier Hollow? Easily our favorite activity of the trip. The thrill of zooming down the hills together was just pure fun.
Later, we did the Ice Castles experience, and it was straight out of a fairytale. The glowing ice sculptures, the sleigh ride through the snow—it felt like stepping into another world. If you’re visiting, make sure to book tickets in advance because they sell out fast.
Day 3: Skiing at Sundance Mountain Resort
- Ski lessons at Sundance Mountain Resort
- Dinner at The Lakehouse at Deer Creek
This was the day my boys officially became skiers. Sundance is named after the Sundance Film Festival, but it’s also one of the best places for beginner skiers. The instructors were patient and so encouraging, which made all the difference.
After skiing, we had dinner at The Lakehouse at Deer Creek. The food was incredible, and the views of the lake made it even better.

Day 4: Skiing at Deer Valley Resort & Cozy Family Time
- Breakfast at The Milk House, Homestead Resort
- Skiing and lessons at Deer Valley Resort
- Dinner at Simon’s Restaurant, Homestead Resort
- Built a snowman and had a snowball fight by the fire
Deer Valley Resort was another great spot for skiing, especially for beginners. It felt less crowded, and the ski instructors really knew how to work with kids. We wrapped up our trip with a classic snowball fight and built a snowman by the fire—one last chance to soak up the winter magic.
How to Avoid Altitude Sickness
Heber Valley sits at about 5,600 feet, and skiing takes you even higher. I didn’t think much about altitude sickness before we arrived, but within 24 hours, I started feeling the effects—chest tightness, nausea, and a headache that wouldn’t quit. Linking altitude sickness must haves here:
- Taking it easy the first day
- Drinking tons of water
- Adding electrolytes to my water
- Taking prescribed altitude sickness tablets (Diamox)
If you’re traveling from a lower altitude like we did, plan to hydrate more than usual and listen to your body.

What to Pack for a Family Ski Trip
Packing for kids in the snow can be overwhelming, but here’s a quick checklist to make it easier: Women Kids
- Thermal base layers
- Waterproof ski jacket and pants
- Warm gloves or mittens
- Wool socks
- Neck gaiters or balaclavas
- Ski goggles and sunglasses
- Hand warmers
- Snow boots
- Sunscreen and lip balm
Dressing in layers is key because the temperature can change throughout the day. The mornings were freezing, but by the afternoon, we were peeling off jackets.
Best Time to Visit Heber Valley for a Family Ski Trip
If you want the best snow conditions, January and February are ideal. We went over MLK weekend, and it was perfect—fresh powder, fewer crowds, and every winter activity in full swing.
The first snowfall usually happens in late October, and the season lasts through Easter. If you prefer a quieter experience, March and April are great for spring skiing.
Final Thoughts on Our Heber Valley Trip
This trip was everything I hoped for and more. Seeing my Texas boys experience real snow, learn to ski, and fall in love with winter activities made my heart so full. Heber Valley is truly one of the best destinations for a family ski trip. From beginner-friendly slopes to tubing, snowmobiling, and exploring ice castles, there’s something for everyone.
If you’re thinking about planning your own winter adventure, do it. The memories you’ll make are worth it.
